Formulas used

Tap drill: TD = D − 1.299038 × (%/100) × pitch (metric); TD = D − (1.299038 × %/100) / TPI (imperial)
Example: M10×1.5 at 75%: 10 − 1.299×0.75×1.5 = 8.54 → standard 8.5 mm drill

Frequently asked questions

What size drill for an M10×1.5 tap?
8.5 mm at 75% engagement (calculated 8.54 mm). For 65% engagement use 8.6 mm; for 80% use 8.4 mm.
What size drill for a 1/4-20 tap?
At 75%: 0.2010 in — a #7 drill (0.2010 in) exactly; 13/64 in (0.2031 in) gives about 70%.
Why not drill at 100% thread?
Doubling engagement from 50% to 100% roughly doubles tapping torque while adding almost no joint strength — the bolt, not the internal thread, controls assembly strength. 60–75% is the practical range.
